Finished Lap Quilt and Tote

Finally, I can show some pictures of my finished Lap Quilt! I kept the quilting quite simple, because of the quilts size and the batting, which is a bit fluffy and I wanted the quilt to stay soft. For the binding I used a neutral fabric, which I hand stitched to the back of the quilt.

In the meantime, I made a Trail Tote for my little sisters birthday. It is not perfect but it turned out better then I thought it would while sewing. And best of all... my little sister loves her new tote!

My next project is going to be a baby quilt for some good friends. I already did the cutting for it.

Sewing up some presents

While working on my lap quilt, I started some small new projects: I started my first table runner and I finished two small zippered pouches.

The table runner is a birthday present for my mother, I only used yellow and orange coulored fabrics and white as neutral colour. For the pattern I decided to frame three bigger squares (16 x 16 cm / 6'' x 6'') with rows of smaller ones (4 x 4 cm /1.5'' x 1.5").

(Actually the runner is not curved at the bottom edge, its just a lens distortion)

I am very happy how accurately the seams meet. The whole runner measures 40 x 96 cm/16'' x 38'' and will feature solid dark orange fabric for the binding and I am going to quilt this one with slight waves.

Besides finishing the top of the table runner, I completed two little zippered pouches. The one on the right is another birthday present for a good friend and the other one is for my fathers smoking equipment.

70 bunte Blöcke...

Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich endlich mein erstes Quilttop in Kuscheldeckengröße fertiggestellt! Ich wollte schon eine ganze Weile eine Decke fürs Sofa nähen, aber immer ist etwas dazwischen gekommen. Das Top ist 1,50 m x 2,10 m groß und besteht aus 70 Blöcken. Auch wenn das Design und die Blöcke eher einfach sind, mag ich die Decke jetzt schon sehr, einfach weil es die erste in der Größe ist, die ich bisher gemacht habe.

A few days ago I finally finished my first lap quilt top. I wanted to sew a quilt like this for while but there was always something else to do. The quilt top measures 59'' x 83" and it consists of 70 blocks. Although the blocks and the design are very simple, I really like this one, because its the first I made in that size. I plan to keep the quilting for this top simple as well, especially because I want it to be finished so I can finally use it.

Mini Duffle Bag

Letztes Wochende habe ich dieses Täschchen im Miniformat genäht (gerademal 27x9 cm groß). Sie ist sozusagen ein Gutschein für eine Freundin, als kleines Dankeschön für ihre Unterstützung in der letzten Zeit. Die eigentliche Tasche soll dann aussehen wie diese hier, die ich vor kurzem für mich selbst genäht habe.

Ich finde dieses Minitäschchen irgendwie sehr niedlich:

Last weekend I sewed this mini Duffle Bag, mesauring 10''x3.5''. I made it as a voucher for a good friend. She saw this quilted Duffle Bag I made for myself a few weeks ago and she really liked it, so I thought to make one for her as a thank-you gift for her support in the last month.

I find this tiny bag kind of cute:

Wedding Clutch

Es ist wirklich sehr praktisch, wenn man sich Dinge selbst einfach nach seinen Wünschen und Vorstellungen anfertigen kann.

Sometimes, being able to create things according to your own wishes and ideas really does come in handy.

Für meine Hochzeit in einigen Wochen fehlte mir noch ein kleines Täschchen. Da ich die meisten Clutches, die man in den Läden kaufen kann nicht sehr überzeugend finde, wollte ich eigentlich auf eine Tasche verzichten. Dann bin ich aber doch noch auf die Idee gekommen mir einfach selbst eine zu nähen.

I still needed a small Clutch for my wedding a few weeks from now. Because I didn’t like most of the Clutches available in stores, I actually decided against wearing one. Then it came to my mind that I could make one myself.

Ich habe die Clutch nach dieser sehr einfachen und guten Anleitung genäht. Den Träger habe ich etwas länger gemacht, so finde ich es angenehmer zu tragen und habe statt des Magnetknopfs einen Plastikdruckknopf verwendet. Während des Nähens war ich noch etwas skeptisch ob das ganze am Ende wirklich gut aussieht, war dann aber doch zufrieden.

I used this very easy tutorial to make the Clutch. I made the strap a few inches longer, because I think it’s more comfortable to wear and I used a white plastic snap instead of the magnetic snap. At first I was a little skeptical but now I really like how it turned out. 

Stoffeinkauf...

Letztes Wochende habe ich mir mal einen ganzen Tag Zeit fürs Stoffe einkaufen genommen und ich war sehr erfolgreich:

Die Stoffe auf der rechten Seite sind aus einem Lagerverkauf im Süden von Frankfurt. Die Auswahl ist wirklich groß und über die Preise kann man auch nicht meckern.

I went to a warehouse sale in the south of Frankfurt where I bought the fabric on the right. 

Die restlichen Stoffe sind aus einem Patchworkladen in Frankfurt, der Quiltmanufaktur. Der Laden ist sehr empfehlenswert. Die Qualität der Stoffe ist prima, das Sortiment ist groß und die Stoffe sind geschmackvoll ausgewählt.

The rest of the fabric is from a quilt shop in Frankfurt, the Quiltmanufaktur. I would recommend visiting the shop if you are nearby. The quality of the fabric is great as well as the product range.

Erste Projekte

ich nähe jetzt seit ca. einem halben Jahr und besonders angetan hat es mir das Thema Patchwork & Quilten. Ich nähe aber auch gerne Taschen und Täschchen für alles mögliche. Als erstes möchte ich hier ein paar meiner "größeren" Projekte vorstellen.

I’ve been sewing for almost six months now and patchworking and quilting are the areas I am mostly interested in. However, I like making small and big bags (for different purposes such as traveling bags or bags and sleeves for cell phones) just as much. The things I would like to show you are my first “big” projects.

Dies ist mein erstes fertiges Quilttop (90x90 cm).

This is my first finished quilt top, measuring 35’’ x 35’’.

Da ich das erste mal Freihandquilten aber nicht gleich an dem guten Stück ausprobieren wollte, habe ich erstmal eine kleinere und einfachere Decke angefertigt. Sie ist 70x70 cm groß und ich finde sie ist für das erste mal Freihandquilten gar nicht so schlecht geworden.

Since I didn’t want to test my skill at free motion quilting on my newly crafted quilt top, I decided to make a simpler one only for the purpose of developing my technique. It is just a small quilt, measuring 27.5” x 27.5”. Actually, I think the free motion quilting went quite well for the first time.

Für den Osterurlaub musste noch schnell eine Reisetasche her. Das ist dabei rausgekommen:

I needed a travel bag for the Easter holidays, so I decided to make one myself:

Die Tasche ist ca 50x30 cm groß mit runden Seitenteilen (auf dem Foto nicht so gut zu sehen) und einmal komplett der Länge nach gequiltet. Der Tragegurt ist verstellbar und außen habe ich noch eine kleine Reißverschlusstasche mit eingenäht. 

The bag measures 20‘‘ x 12‘‘. It is a duffel bag, therefore the sides of the bag are round (even though it is difficult to tell in the picture). I quilted the bag and added a little zippered pocket at one side and an adjustable strap.
